Does forest fire smoke effect house pets?

I live in an area where there are multiple fires surrounding where I live. Someone told me to keep my cat inside because the smoke engulfing the city can hurt their small lungs. Is this true? If wild animals can survive why can’t domesticated animals? Any vets out there?

Wildfire smoke is a mixture of gas and tiny bits of matter, called particulate matter. These affect people, pets and wild animals.

Home Safety With A Wireless Fire Alarm

If you think that personal safety is of the utmost importance then buying a fire alarm is an important investment. Buying a fire alarm will not only protect your family but your house and all your valuable possessions. A wireless fire alarm will also make it much easier for you in several ways.

If a tight budget is one of your concerns then a wireless fire alarm is a good way to solve this problem. A wireless fire alarm is also very versatile and a good way to keep things looking clean. If you have an old house then this is definitely a good option.

Old Homes

If you have an older house that has a certain period look to it then you should definitely invest in a wireless fire alarm. There is nothing like unwieldy wiring to ruin the charm of a grand house. Sticking to a wireless fire alarm will keep this problem to a minimum, no one will notice your wireless fire alarm.

Remodelling

If you are thinking of remodelling your home and this is the reason you are holding off on buying a wireless fire alarm then worry not. a wireless fire alarm can be set up again with little fuss if you decide to change the layout of your home. Also an ideal system to buy if you are thinking of moving.

Keeping Costs Down

If sticking to a budget is a must then a wireless smoke alarm is just what you are looking for. You can eliminate the need to call someone in to install your wireless fire alarm. It is easy enough for you to set up on you own. not only do you save money but you can do this s quickly that there is no need to hold up everyone’s day with a messy installation.

The Safer Option

The wireless fire alarm system is the safer option when it comes to fire alarms. If you have a big home then a wireless fire alarm is definitely a good way to prevent fires. Often you don’t hear a fire alarm until it’s too late in a big home.

A wireless fire alarm with multiple heat sensors in different parts of the house are all connected. This way when one sensor senses heat it will signal to the other sensors that something is wrong. This will give you a lot of warning while the fire is still in a manageable condition and is small enough to put out.

HELP!! Besides cable and DSL, what alternatives do I have for high speed internet service in Los Angeles?

I currently have Time Warner Cable and it is AWFUL. I’ve had to call monthy to have them come out, my service will be finre for a few weeks, then it goes out, they come out, fix it, and then 3-4 weeks later, same thing. Last time someone came, he said the signal was very weak, he couldn’t believe the previous technicians didn’t see that. It worked for almost two months after that, and now here we are again, with no service (I’m jumping on a neighbors wireless signal to write this) Also, each time I call and give them my phone number, they pull up my old address where I lived two years ago. Each time I correct them, they tell me it’s been changed, and then everytime I call back, they say I’m at the old address.
I HATE TIME WARNER CABLE and am ready to send smoke signals rather than deal with there people anymore!! What are my alternatives, besides DSL?

Your only other alternative is satellite. The problem with satellite is that it is really pricey. Otherwise, you’re stuck with DSL or Cable.

Make your Jeep Better-quipped in the Trails With a Best-in-class Oxygen Sensor

The Jeep oxygen sensor is part of the network of data-gathering devices in the vehicle that prevents poor engine performance. Typically mounted on the outskirts of the vehicle’s combustion chambers, the Jeep oxygen sensor screens the fumes on their way out to the car exhaust assembly and feeds the oxygen content read of the gas to the on board electronic control unit (ECU). A low oxygen count in the exhaust can mean a rich fuel delivery, an imbalance characterized by a decrease in power. And, because more air are not being used in combustion and simply go out to the exhaust system untapped, the air-to-fuel imbalance results in an uneconomical use of the fuel and often leads to more exhausts and wasted fuel. Depending on the oxygen content read of the Jeep oxygen sensor, the ECU makes the necessary adjustments on the fuel injection and air intake systems of the vehicle. By calculating the exhaust hundreds of times per minute, the Jeep ECU is able to make adjustments, maintain optimum engine performance and lower smoke emissions. This functionality of the Jeep oxygen sensor is especially useful in the trails, when driving under diverse weather conditions and different drive applications. Air intake is fickle, and depends on numerous factors like altitude, engine temperature, air temperature, engine load, barometric pressure, etc. The level of oxygen in the exhaust is a determinant of the quality of the burn material itself. This is critical as a poor burn not only wastes fuel but may also affect the performance of the Jeep. There are many types of Jeep oxygen sensors currently available, with the single wire oxygen sensor and the heated oxygen sensor being the most commonly used because of their durable finishes. The heated Jeep oxygen sensor has a built-in heating ingredient specifically-designed to maintain the vehicle’s ideal engine operating temperature. The sensing element of these Jeep oxygen sensor types are enclosed in a heavy-duty billet to ensure their precision reads. Common factors that affect the reliability of the Jeep oxygen sensors are bad electrical connections, poor air supply, improper operating temperature, and the exposure of the sensing element to unleaded gasoline.

Why does my car smoke when i take off fast when i shift from first to second?

I have a 2000 5 speed vw jetta. and when i take off from a stop sometimes it smokes out the exhaust when i change from 1st gear to second. now the check engine light is one, but they said it was the o2 sensor. i just replace the catalytic converter. any hints or tip on what to do? thanks!
i beileve the smoke is white, and it only happens when i take off fast

you might want to have the vehicle checked out by a reputable shop,to further see whats wrong with it,usually smoke between changing gears is caused by over loading on gas or bad valve stem seals ,either way id have it checked, most shops will check this and tell you what it is or what they think it is for free,so you have nothing to loose by doing it,good luck on it.

Kidde Smoke, 40, “”, “”, “”, “”, “”, “”, “”, “”, “”, “”, “2″, “”, “4″

Poor Oral Care Could Lead To Cardiovascular Illnesses

Good oral health is not only crucial to your appearance and sense of well-being, but also to your general physical condition. Cavities and gum diseases would likely develop numerous serious ailments, including cardiovascular disease; all forms of diabetes, respiratory disease, and premature and low-weight babies, and has been connected to sleeping problems, as well as behavioral and developmental issues in small children. Untreated cavities can be painful and lead to serious infections. Poor mouth conditions also impair your ability to chew up and process food properly.

We exercise and watch what we eat to help reduce our risk of heart attack, stroke and certain cancers. In much the same way, we should take good care of our oral (dental) health now to prevent gum disease and tooth loss later. Why is this so important? The reasons are much more than cosmetic. While we once believed the worst outcome of gum disease was tooth loss, we now know that oral health matters from head to toe.

For those with gum disorder, the common function of brushing the teeth or chewing gum could injure gum tissue, allowing germs to get into the bloodstream. It is believed that these microorganisms could move to different parts of the body, possibly exacerbating or causing other kinds of illnesses. Periodontitis, or gum disease, can more than triple the possibilities of the person experiencing a heart attack or stroke and is also linked to all forms of diabetes. It sparks an elevation in lipoproteins in the blood, along with low-density lipoproteins (LDLs) causing atherosclerosis, or artery hardening and narrowing.

Oral health means more than merely good-looking teeth and pleasant breath. Inadequate oral health and untreated dental illnesses and conditions might have a substantial bearing on quality of life, and in many cases, the condition of the mouth area mirrors the condition of the body as a whole. For example, when the mouth area is healthy, it’s likely your overall health is good, too. On the other hand, when you suffer poor oral hygiene, you could also have other health conditions. Recent reports show a link between periodontal (gum) problems and stroke, heart disease, and pre-term low-birth-weight babies. Likewise, over 90% of all systemic illnesses have dental manifestations. That means the dental professional may perhaps be the first health professional to detect a health problem.

As with diabetic issues, the connection between poor oral health and cardiovascular conditions has been acknowledged — both in many cases are discovered together — but it still has not been determined conclusively whether there is a direct causal relationship linking them. (One explanation is that there are various other possible risk elements — like smoking and old age — that could lead both to gum disease and cardiovascular disease) By the time we reach adulthood, the majority of us understand that the implications of not flossing are pretty tough on our teeth. Routine flossing is a significant part of dental care and advances strong teeth and gums. This painless daily ritual not only safeguards your mouth, but also could provide help to your heart and arteries.

Can I use a hardwire smoke/CO detector on batteries alone?

The Kidde combo Smoke/CO detector that is interconnectable I want only comes as a hardwired detector with battery backup. Is it possible to just use it as a battery operated unit without connecting it to my house wiring? I assume the answer is yes since the battery is backup power.

Yes you can but you will need to use a good 9volt battery preferably a lithium for the unit. Check for the proper operation every three months. when the battery gets too weak then replace, regular batteries usually every 9-12 months. Lithium every three years.

Quitting Smoking Side Effects: What Are They?

Smoking is a very tough habit to quit. Anybody that has attempted to quit can testify to the powerful hold that cigarettes can have. The main reason why cigarettes are addicting is because of nicotine. As everybody knows, cigarettes contain nicotine. Nicotine is a drug that is every bit as addicting as heroin or cocaine.

In humans, nicotine acts as stimulant. Nicotine also acts as relaxant. Therefore, the ingestion of nicotine makes people feel more alert and relaxed at the same time. Many people find the combination of being alert and relaxed to be a very pleasurable experience. Since cigarettes contain nicotine, smoking is a very pleasurable act for many people.

Unfortunately, nicotine changes the way the brain functions, which causes people to become physically addicted to it. Accordingly, people addicted to nicotine experience very unpleaseant feelings when they are deprived of nicotine. Hence, the reason so many people have a hard time quitting smoking. Common side effects of nicotine withdrawal include:

irritability

impatience

hostility

anxiety

depressed mood

difficulty concentrating

restlessness

decreased heart rate

increased appetite or weight gain

After quitting smoking, nicotine withdrawal symptoms will appear in a few hours. The withdrawal symptoms usually reach their peak about 24 to 48 hours after quitting. For some smokers who have quit, the symptoms can last up to six months. However, for most smokers, withdrawal symptoms usually last about a month.

The side effects of quitting smoking are the main reason smokers often fail to quit. It is also why quitting “cold turkey” has a very low success rate. Most smokers, who successfully quit smoking, do it by getting some sort of help to deal with the effects of nicotine withdrawal.

The most common form of help is some variation of nicotine replacement therapy. As its name suggest, the idea behind nicotine replacement therapy is to mitigate the desire to smoke by supplying the smoker with nicotine in some form other than cigarettes. Nicotine replacement therapies typically come in the form of patches, lozenges, gums, and nasal sprays. Most nicotine replacement therapies are well known to most smokers.

After nicotine replacement therapies, herbal treatments are popular to help smokers quit. There are many herbs that give the same pleasurable sensations as nicotine, but they are not as addicting.

Smokers who have a plan for dealing with the side effects of quitting smoking will be more successful than those who don’t. Accordingly, if you are a smoker and want to quit, do some research on the help you will need to deal with the side effects of quitting smoking.

Smoke Detectors – Avoid Fires and Save Lives

Fires in the home take many lives each year. They occur most often when the family is sleeping and a properly functioning smoke detector has repeatedly proven to prevent untimely fatalities.

Although the evidence clearly states smoke detectors do save lives many homes do not have properly functioning smoke detectors. There are many reasons for this; some people may object to the expense, for others reasoning may include not having the knowledge to install a smoke detector properly. Some have smoke detectors with dead batteries in them — rendering the device useless. While it is recommended that batteries in each device be replaced every six months a lot of people will simply forget or remove a battery in an over sensitive detector and therefore the smoke detector is essentially useless in the event of a fire.

Is Your Detector Too Sensitive?

Calculations from the National Fire Protection Association and the U.S. Fire Administration suggest that large numbers of fires in the home are caused by Christmas trees and holiday lights. People are reminded to replace batteries at each time change and it is recommended to check them before adding any holiday decorations using electric as a safety measure in the event a fire occurs. While cooking holiday meals the smoke detector may sound the alarm but it is not recommended to take the batteries out. Tip: If your detector seems too sensitive, use a vacuum cleaner to clean dust out of the device as this can make a big difference.

Smoke Detector Placement

In the United States, local laws vary on placement of smoke detectors in the home. The rule of thumb is one per level and one in the vicinity of each bedroom. Statistically, fatalities that do occur in homes with working smoke detectors are more often than not because most homes have only one per level and while asleep, residents hear the alarm too late.

In some areas, homes that are a new construction involve laws that are a bit stricter and take advantage of newer technologies. New homes must have smoke detectors wired into the electrical system and provide devices in each bedroom. Many families are following suit and adding the wired alarms when updating homes. It’s imperative to work with a professional in this situation. If you’re looking to do this in the Atlanta area, it is imperative to contact an Atlanta electrician before attempting to install any electrical components in the home in order to ensure proper installation and keep safety hazards at bay.

Many state programs provide free smoke detectors to low income residents. However after an Atlanta fire took the lives of three young sisters in 2009; many debates have sparked over the effectiveness of the older model devices. Atlanta electrical contractors are offering area residents advice on how to upgrade to newer wired models.

My smoke detectors are hard wired into the house and the green light is off and won’t turn back on..why?

There are seven smoke detectors, all have new batteries. When one alarm goes off, they all go off. Today they went off twice for no apparent reason. All have green lights except two, where there is no light, even with new batteries.

A/C power failure?

Defective smoke detector? Smoke detectors have a life expectancy. Might be time to change them.

Take them down. Check for A/C. Replace SDs if you need to.

Along with having adequate property insurance, purchasing, properly installing, routinely testing, and maintaining a commercial fire alarm is one of the wisest and most cost effective loss prevention steps a business owner can take. Fire alarms work by giving an early warning that fire has been detected. This early warning helps to increase the odds of quickly extinguishing the blaze, and reducing overall property damage. There is no question that properly functioning fire alarms help save property and lives.

A properly maintained, and tested, commercial fire system has many benefits. By making sure the fire alarm system is working correctly, it helps to ensure that your customers and employees can safely evacuate the building in the event of a fire, and, in many cases, it can help to reduce the cost of your insurance premiums. Many insurance carriers offer a discount for fire alarm systems.

One of the best ways to make certain your alarm system is in good working order is to contract with a alarm servicing company to test the system. Regular, preferably weekly, testing of the system should be included in the contract you sign with the company you choose. A professional fire alarm servicing company will include weekly testing of several different areas of the system to make certain the entire system is being properly maintained. Many different factors can cause a fire detection system to fail at a critical moment, such as loose cables, blocked sensors, or a faulty electrical supply to the system. Weekly inspections and testing can help identify these, and other, potential hazards early enough to correct the problem before it becomes too late.

Make sure that the alarm company you chose meets the requirements set forth by your insurance carrier, in order to be fully covered against any potential loss due to a fire. The alarm company should also have the ability to monitor the system for such occurrences as “false alarms”, have a rapid reply time, and be available to assist you with any questions or concerns you may have.

Installing an adequate alarm system is one area where a business owner does not want to skimp on expense. The old adage really is true: “You get what you pay for.” The extra money spent up front will more than pay for itself in the future, by providing safety and protection for your business, your workers and your customers.

How Can You Compare Fire Alarm System and Smoke Detector?

People do not have enough capability to control the unpredicted things which are happened to their life, thence they try the best and most effective solution to deal with the worst possibilities. There are two popular examples you can use as the comparison, such as fire alarm and smoke detector. Which one should you use and install at home? The first key is about the details of each product. It will be really helpful to assess the capability of the products.

Probably, you can opt one of them based on your need. But, it is not the main point. The core idea is to provide the home with the best security warning device. This is the main thing for family safety. Establishing the alarm will be necessary thing due to the fact that some people die because of fire accident. The comparison below will tell you about the difference.

The first is about smoke detector. This is the equipment which will alert you when the danger or fire is possibly happened at home. The equipment will do the good work especially at night. In any case, it provides the early warning of a fire. It is great to let the family members get out for safety reason. The moderate price becomes the reason why people take this one as their option. What about the fire alarm system? The wireless detector will be a practical choice and you can establish it easily and quickly.

The fire alarm system is widely recognized as the more complex one than the smoke detectors. Farther, the fire sprinkler system will react to the smoke and flames. Thus, it will mechanically activate the alarm to warn people at home. Other great thing about the system is that it provides the optional transmitter for assisting older people. Besides, it is helpful for those who live with health problems. The sound effects will be combined with visual alert, so it supplies the complete alarm system. Which one do you like best?

Why are they cutting NASA’s budget so much?

They embody the people’s dream of exploring space, and has done so much. The defense budget for last year was ~20% of federal spending, while NASA has accounted for >1% for the fast 35 YEARS.

Many advancements in science have been made by them, such as CAT scans, water purification tech, wireless gadgets, Smoke detectors, even those incredibly comfy memory foam pillows. They’ve made over 6000 patents, ad in return they get a budget cut.

They’ve inspired with these flights into space.
The Fisher pen wasn’t designed for NASA, and both factions used pencils and they both switched to the pressurized pens because they don’t want broken pencils and shaving floating around. Herp a derp

It’s absolutely ridiculous. It’s because they are spending all of our money on an unnecessary war. It’s just sad.

Carbon monoxide and fireplaces are a dangerous combination. Carbon monoxide is a type of gas that kills almost 300 people in their homes each year. Carbon monoxide is given off by burning any fuel. Therefore, any fuel-burning appliance in the home is a possible CO source. When appliances are kept in good working form, they produce little CO. Appliances that aren’t operating properly can produce deadly CO concentrations in your home. CO poisoning can also be caused by using charcoal grill inside the house or when a car is left running in the garage. Sources of carbon monoxide include room heaters, furnace, charcoal grill, range, water heater, auto in closed garage, and fireplaces. Precautionary measures must be taken to avoid the deadly duo that’s carbon monoxide and fireplaces that are inadequately maintained.

Fireplace safety tips include the following:

·	Fuel-burning furnaces, appliances, or fireplaces should have at least one CO detector that’s ideally situated, such as in a hallway or sleeping area.

·	The fireplace damper must be opened before lighting the fire. It should be kept open until the ashes have cooled. The damper must not be closed if the ashes are still warm. The build-up of poisonous gases inside the home can be avoided if the damper is left open. When carbon monoxide

·	Gasoline, charcoal lighter or other fuel should not be used to light or relight a fire since the vapors can explode. Flammable materials must never be kept near a fire. And, flammable liquids must never be stored in the home. Charcoal must never be used in a fireplace because of the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

·	A chimney that is blocked or clogged due to leaves or soot can cause combustion byproducts, including CO, to be expelled into the home. Cracked masonry could also cause an obstruction. Regular inspection and cleaning using a chimney sweep can help helps prevent or remove blockages. The chimney could also be fitted with a screen cap to dissuade nest-building.

·	A common source of carbon monoxide include wood-burning and gas powered fireplaces. To make sure there is fresh air, the window should be left open a few inches. Treated woods, painted wood, and scrap lumber should not be burned in a wood burning fireplace. Only seasoned firewood must be burned.

·	The chimney dampers must also be opened before using fireplaces. Opening it can produce a draft that goes up the chimney. This will provide the fire air to burn efficiently at the same time providing ventilation of smoke and carbon monoxide.

·	Gas logs or burners emit a lot of CO since the less-efficient, yellow flames are desired for a cozy atmosphere. Those who own ventless fireplaces must be extra careful since these appliance expel all combustion byproducts into the room. While the fireplace is run, the combustion process is fueled by the oxygen taken from the room. When there is less oxygen, the combustion becomes less efficient, giving off more CO.

·	Regular inspection and maintenance of the flue, burner, and chimney should significantly lessen any CO troubles affecting the furnace.

·	A qualified technician must be hired to examine chimneys and fuel-burning appliances. This is to ensure that these devices are functioning properly. The technician should also check that there is no blockage that’s preventing the harmful fumes from being vented out of the house.

These are just some measures that people can take to guarantee a safety home. It’s a better alternative to spend a few dollars on proper maintenance of the home than to suffer the consequences of neglect.

Is the steam from boiling water carbon monoxide?

I boiled some pasta and rice and my place is kind of smoky now. Is the smoke carbon monoxide?

No, steam is harmless, if there was any sort of smoke it didn’t come from the boiling pasta water. Perhaps there was some sort of residue on the bottom of the pot you used and it burned off during cooking. Also, if you have an electric range there could have been some oil or something on the eye that started smoking while you were making dinner

Smoke & Heat Detectors- Smoke detectors are available that will interface with your security system. The smoke detectors that are already in your home can’t be tied into your security system. The device that the builder put in your home is either electrical, battery operated, or in some instances both, if you have the better quality detectors. Lifesaving smoke detectors should be in every home. If you elect to add some to your system, your existing detectors should be left in place, as they are still able to help give early warning in case of a fire.

If you add a smoke detector to your system it should be placed in the highest point of your home as possible, as smoke will rise no matter where it originates. Some homeowners elect to place one in the basement and top floor, and some want one added to every floor.

The technology that makes most of these devices work is “photoelectric technology.” This means that the detector basically takes a snapshot of the density of smoke that enters its chamber, and wants to see a density increase as it samples every few milliseconds. This technology makes the detector much more discriminating then its inexpensive counterparts.

Many of these devices also detect temperature change with their built in heat detectors. This means that the device will go into an alarm condition, if the temperature in its area of coverage is rising rapidly, even if there is no smoke yet. Independent heat detectors are also available, if you would like an added degree of protection in areas such as kitchens, furnace rooms, attics and fireplaces. (Required to meet code, in some municipalities)

There are many advantages to adding fire devices to your security system. Some of them are:

* Your detector is on all the time, even if your alarm is disarmed.

* The devices work off the power from your alarm system and use its backup power supplies should power fail.

* The siren will emit a tone that is audibly different then a burglary siren, so that you can differentiate.

* Your dispatch is being made without you having to call for help yourself. This gives you more time to gather your loved ones and pets for immediate exit.

* A dispatch will take place even if you are not home. Typically flames will be coming through your roof, by the time your neighbors see them, and call for help. This early response may save your pets and a good portion of your home.

* Insurance companies often give an additional discount, off your homeowners insurance, for having a fire system. These devices could effectively pay for themselves, after a few years.

(INSIDE SCOOP!)

Some municipalities will not dispatch their limited resources to an automatic fire alarm, unless it is designed completely to local code. This is a very expensive endeavor that, many homeowners in those areas can’t justify. Businesses will have to do this, in order to get an occupancy permit. Check with your local fire authority before investing in smoke or heat detectors that will not get a response.

How do you make a smoke detector less sensitive?

Every time the oven door is opened after preheating, the smoke detector will go off. Basically anytime the oven door is opened after the oven is turned on makes the smoke alarm go off. Some advice please.

Clean your oven. It shouldn’t smoke.
