Jon Oberheide of Duo Security has released a video demonstrating two security vulnerabilities which could allow apps to take control of Android devices. The video was created to generate interest in the firm’s upcoming workshop on mobile security at the SOURCE security conference in Barcelona this November. Last year Oberheide was responsible for exposing a weakness in Google’s Android Marketplace, which allowed the remote installation of malicious code from within an app. The first vulnerability demonstrated in the new video affects all Android devices. it allows an already installed app to install other apps without prompting the user to approve their permissions. He says this problem can also be exploited by an attack which compromises an otherwise safe app after it has been installed. The second attack demonstrated would allow an app to gain full control over an Android device by using a Linux kernel exploit which bypasses security permission limitations. While Google’s lack of control over Android vendors and handsets has been instrumental in its success, it also poses significant security challenges. By ceding control over the application of updates to Android devices, Google has created a system where commercial factors may outweigh the best interests of consumers. Even if Samsung, HTC, or Motorola believes it is in their best interest to offer immediate updates, in many cases their decisions may be overruled by a carrier whose primary interest is ensuring control over customers’ phones.

Does section 4 of the GPL version 2 mean that many (if not all) Android vendors have already lost their rights to distribute Linux? according to an IP litigator, the answer is yes.

Edward Naughton, litigator and partner with the lawfirm Brown Rudnick believes that by refusing to make freely available the GPL’d portions of Honeycomb, Google is forcing its OEM partners into a situation of non-compliance with the GPL.

Naughton believes that this puts OEMs, and even Google itself, in a really bad position:

In the Best buy case, the SFC and SFLC argued that a violation of the GPLv2 immediately terminates a licensee’s right to distribute covered code and that the licensee cannot remedy its violation by providing the source code after the fact. The express permission of the relevant copyright holders is necessary to reestablish the licensee’s rights.

Given the woeful track record of GPL compliance in the Android ecosystem, that argument would imply that almost every OEM distributing Android devices today is unlicensed, and even Google itself may not be licensed to distribute portions of the Android code.

Open source advocate Florian Mueller dissect section 4 of the GPL version 2. Here’s the relevant section:

4. you may not copy, modify, sublicense, or distribute the Program except as expressly provided under this License. any attempt otherwise to copy, modify, sublicense or distribute the Program is void, and will automatically terminate your rights under this License. However, parties who have received copies, or rights, from you under this License will not have their licenses terminated so long as such parties remain in full compliance.

Mueller steps through the section, but here are the highlights:

1st sentence: Obligations under the license, one of those being source code disclosure as outlined in the previous section.

2nd sentence: Sanctions for those who don’t comply, including automatic termination of all rights under the license.

Is the GPL enforceable? It seems to be.

Back in 2009 the Software Freedom Conservancy (SFC) and the Software Freedom Law Center (SFLC) bought copyright infringement lawsuits against manufacturers and distributors of embedded Linux devices that made use of the BusyBox utilities. One of the cases involved Best buy which sold a Blu-ray player with embedded Linux and BusyBox. The SFC and SFLC teamed up with one contributor to the BusyBox project and filed motion for a preliminary injunction to prevent Best buy from selling the Blu-Ray players despite the BusyBox code had been made available. The case never made it to court but Mueller says that ‘it’s a safe assumption that Best buy had to cough up a significant amount of money to resolve this matter.’

So where is this headed? according to the SFC/SFLC the only way out of this would be for to secure a new license from each and every original right holder (that is, the original contributors). When it comes to Linux, this could mean having to approach literally thousands of people, and any one of those could hire a lawyer and start legal action.

It’s going to get messy.

I am only asking this very generally. so no one needs to be specific. my friend company is gonna set up a network monitoring system for another company in their godowns. he is elected to lead the team. these are big godowns that house goods and equipment. in this network system, they have scanning equipment installed, a burglar alarm system, an inventory and all kinds of possible things that I know nothing about.

As to be expected, my friend's company is gong to use the good old Unix system for all these. everything is to be run in Unix. the entire system will be cost a few million pounds.

I was thinking perhaps should he use Linux instead? if he does, the costs will be dramatically reduced, wouldn't it? after all, Linux is FREE.

Can we so blindly just substitute Unix with Linux in any system we use?

Actually I hope you understand. I know next to nothing what he is doing. I was just wondering can he just use Linux instead of Unix. maybe I just suggest to him? Or should I just shut up?

What do you think?

Linux is built upon Unix. it depends on what he wants to do with it. Linux for servers and the like, i.e. professional builds, aren't necessarily free either.

I don't know about blindly but linux can do just about everything unix can do sine its UNIX BASED

Linux could be substituted for unix in most cases, the largest issue is configuration and support.

Well, for starters, Unix is a spexification while Linux is a kernel. I would have to know exactly what he's doing to suggest what to do.

I love the term "good old UNIX"
The whole Internet infrastructure is based upon UNIX and various different version. there is Nothing old about the most stable 64bit OS. Now I'm a Windows chap but in large environments it is just common sense to stick to a robust stable system. Unix systems are for big boys and rightly so. You would make a fool of yourself to suggest Linux as an alternative and I don't like to tell anyone to shut up

Linux is built on unix, just like mac os x. Some versions of linux and unix you have to pay for, Ubuntu server i think is free, but is not as good as red hat enterprise but i think you have to pay for it.
So its really up to him, anything he can do on unix he should be able to do in linux, so its really up to him, and if he has the funds for unix (if its costing him) why not let him just go with unix.

System Door, 40, “”, “”, “”, “”, “”, “”, “”, “”, “”, “”, “2″, “”, “4″

There are a number of factors you can evaluate prior to buying an automatic door system. When you spend your hard earned money on the installation of these systems then ensure that you buy the perfect system. You might buy a plastic gate thinking that it is not at all expensive and offers a lot of benefits as well but plastic is not a strong material. When the conditions are cold, plastic can become fragile and even break as well.

You can find out whether the material is plastic or metal by checking the weights. Metallic material is weightier as compared to the plastic one. Even with this heavy weight, metal survives longer as compared to plastic. Moreover you may also examine the pace at which the door opens. The gears made up of steel open weighty gate rapidly as compared to the plastic gears that open the light gate very slowly.

Another factor is that you can examine how every system functions so as to select the best option available for you that suits your requirements. Moreover you may buy the one that adds artistic value to your house as well.

The auto door systems would have load rankings to help you analyze the size of motor that you require to open and shut the door at the pace that you desire. Few of them might need direct electric current power to function where as on the other hand few work on solar energy. You must always consider the energy choices available to you.

Last but not the least; you must consider the mounting system of the automatic door. There are diverse kinds of systems that function well with diverse kinds of mounting systems. You might require setting up tracks for slide doors; on the other hand underground systems might need digging.

How expensive would it be to fix my power door lock system?

I drive a 2003 chevy malibu and the power lock quit working a few weeks ago. I’m in the process of trading it in for another car but I’d like to fix that particular issue because I’m afraid it would adversely affect the car’s value. Does anybody know how much i should be looking at to get it fixed? Thanks for any answers!

If all the locks quit working look for a bad fuse in the fusebox or a wire has come off your main switchbox on the drivers door, cheap to fix. If just 1 lock is not working you will have to take the door panel off and look to see if the plug came off the door lock itself inside the door.

Low Cost Home Security, Protecting Your Home Within Your Budget

At some point in our lives, or another, most of us find ourselves on a limited budget. We are constantly telling ourselves that we cannot afford this and we cannot afford that.

Sometimes we make the assumption that we can’t afford something before we investigate the cost involved. Do you make that mistake with your home security?

Perhaps we would all like the latest all singing, all dancing home security system, but maybe we are unable to stretch our budget to afford it just at the present. However, not being able to afford the very best in home security technology does not mean that we should neglect the security of our homes altogether, in fact it would be very foolish to do so.

Many of the most effective steps that you can take to keep the burglar out of your home do not involve technological wizardry at all, and are in fact common sense, low cost home security ideas.

Do you lock up every time that you leave your home, locking all windows and exterior doors? Yes, skilled burglars can defeat locks, but many burglaries are committed by unskilled opportunist thieves who look for the door or window left unlocked. How much does it cost to get into the habit of locking up when you leave?

How about your yard, is it overgrown, does it provide cover for an intruder? Keeping bushes and shrubbery trimmed to a reasonable height will deny burglars the opportunity to work unseen while they attempt to break into your home.

Displaying home security decals may make a burglar pass by your home. Will security decals and yard signs fool a burglar into thinking that you have a security system? Possibly not, but they may make a less experienced burglar think twice and if he is unsure he will likely move on. Home security decals are so low cost as to suit anyone’s budget.

A very effective and very low cost method of protecting your home is belonging to your local neighborhood watch. It doesn’t get better than this, neighbor looking out for neighbor, and the monetary cost is hardly anything at all. Neighborhood watch does cost you a little of your time though, members have to be actively involved for it to work. But you can afford a little time to protect your home and neighborhood.

Leave some lighting on when you go out, a home that is occupied is likely to have lighting on in more than one room, so to make the impression that somebody is at home leave at least two rooms lit up. Better still, use low cost timers to switch lights on at random times.

Other Low Cost Home Security Solutions.

Okay, so you can do a lot to improve the security of your home without spending out on technology. But you and your family may feel more secure if your home is protected by some sort of security system. Do they all cost the earth? No, there are many home security systems that can be labeled low cost.

It is often the case that when new products, including home security systems, are launched they carry a price tag that is on the high side. Then after a time the price settles at a more reasonable level. Could it be that home security devices and systems are now more affordable that when you last checked?

Most security systems are expandable. You could protect your home with a low cost home security system that covers the basics and add more sensors and detectors as your budget allows.

Whilst there is nothing that makes your home absolutely burglar proof, there are many low cost home security ideas that you can employ that will help to keep the burglar out of your home.

Since Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone in 1872, it has been widely used by people for calling. The invention of the radio by Guglielmo Marconi, known as wireless telegraphy, has paved the way for birth of mobile communication, which used handheld talking radios known as “walkie talkies”. These devices have been effective since their use on World War II, although the frequency limits the communication distance connecting them, in comparison to telephones. Later, the cordless phone was invented to provide people the convenience of calling people anywhere around their homes.

That’s just on the oral communication side, the written side of communication has innovated since people created drawings during prehistoric times. Alphabets came to existence as part of languages people speak since the Sumerian civilization, which led to the concept of sending and receiving written messages. Before telephones and radios were invented, people write letters and send them to their recipients through the use of postal service. It was not long until computers and Internet came to existence within the 1980s, resulting to the use of electronic mail (email) that sends and receives messages conveniently without the costly reliance on various modes of delivery.

Combining the history of both oral and written communication, SMS or short message service emerged since its first application to mobile phones in December 1982. After its debut, the number of SMS active users has grown to 2.4 billion, which makes up 74% of all mobile phone consumers. In fact, SMS has been widely used by advertisers to endorse their products and services due to the rising number of cell phone users. Due to its reliability to various consumers, 4.1 trillion text messages were sent as of 2008, making SMS text messaging service a large-scale industry, with its value worth more than $81,000,000,000 worldwide as of 2006.

Everyone who has experience on using mobile phones knows what SMS does. For those who don’t, SMS is simply defined as sending text messages and its one of the widely used functions of the mobile phone other than calling. It became part of the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) in 1985, wherein its technical definition is about sending a message consisting of a maximum of 160 characters. SMS users also changed the concept of using languages in order to hasten the communication process and to conveniently send short messages better at a limited space. For example, the English word “you” becomes “u”, since both the word and the letter are pronounced similarly. The shortcut words, like “u” and “y”, are also being used as part of Internet slang.

SMS works in a technical process, wherein the messages are delivered to a Short Message Service Center, which applies the “store and forward” method. It involves storing the message in a temporary location before being delivered to its last destination, which is the recipient of the text message. As mentioned earlier the maximum characters to be typed in an SMS message is 160, which includes letters, numbers, symbols, and spaces. Messages with higher content can be sent through the use of several messages, wherein each one is initiated with a user data header (UDH) that has segmentation information.

That’s how SMS is understood in terms of history, definition, and process. You may wonder yourself which function is cooler to use, calling or SMS. What matters the most is that SMS has changed the modern society that it has taken communication all the way to the next level.

Well, I’m not concerned with the purpose of this device or what is it for, but the thing is how that could be harmful to me, probably not all mobiles in that device are transmitting at the same, time I’m not sure! but it could happen, is that of any danger.

an example of this device is at the following link (and sorry guys the link is unclickable, as I’m only a level 1 user, where yahoo doesn’t allow users at this level to post an active link, so please copy and paste):

I found the exact one that he wants to install it:

you can read out the transmission power is about 2w, and I wonder if that is the individual transmitting power of each or the overall one! and would that be of any harm to humans!

It’s 2 watts total, less than a cell phone, so there should be no concerns.

Recorder Dvr, 40, “”, “”, “”, “”, “”, “”, “”, “”, “”, “”, “2″, “”, “4″

Digital Video Recorder (DVR) For Security

A Digital Video Recorder (DVR) offeres a superior way of processing a Video signal, as opposed to older methods which utilize analog techniques. The method of storage being the main difference where Video tape is replaced by a Digital Storage Device such as Flash memory, or a Hard Disk Drive. Digital data transfer is not as prone to the effects of noise, crosstalk, or signal coupling issues.

Once a Video Image consisting of single or multiple frames has been stored it is extremely easy to modify or add effects to. In a lot of cases a Personal Computer (PC) is involved in the storage and image modification process. The digital information (Digitized from incoming Video) usually originated from a PCI board which is plugged into the PC’s internal backplane, or simpler yet, via the USB (Universal Serial Bus) port.

(Video Digitizers) that plug into the computers USB port are often in the form of a small dongle. Some versions provide Composite Video, S-Video, and Stereo Audio inputs while others provide multiple Composite Video inputs. The later, is more suitable for Security Camera applications where Composite Video is still the accepted standard.

These devices also have the advantage of being able to rob their power supply ( 5VDC) from the USB port that they are plugged into.

There are some advantages to digitizing S-Video (the ‘S’ stands for Separate) over a Composite Video Signal. S-Video consists of Separate channels for the Luminance (Y) and Chrominance (C) Video components (both are in time synchronism). The Luminance signal conveys the brightness component of the image (like Composite Video without any Color component) while the Chrominance component is simply the Color information. As both S-Video channels are separated, there are no crosstalk issues and detrimental Bandwidth limitations due to low pass filtering. Due to these characteristics, S-Video offers improved image reproduction.

For Security and Night Vision Applications a reliable method of recording events is paramount. Use of a DVR PCI Card often provides a superior solution for time lapse image capture, and date and time stamping requirements. Also, due to advances in technology, it is often the most cost effective solution to recording Video images over long periods of time without image degradation.
