IR Illuminators or Infrared illuminators used in CCTV and Video Surveillance systems consist of two types;

LED Infrared Illuminators and Halogen Bulb IR Illuminators. IR illuminator can greatly improve the effective night vision of an IR sensitive security camera and the overall performance of CCTV video surveillance systems in low light applications. Weather halogen bulb or LED Infrared Illuminators are chosen the key to selecting the correct IR illuminator is based on three major factors.

1. The IR Illuminators overall Distance capabilities

Since Infrared emitters or illuminators can add lighting to an existing surveillance camera if the camera is infrared sensitive or compatible, long distance capabilities can be reached by adding more IR Leds. However longer distance will result in smaller illuminator beam.

2. The spread of the Infrared illuminator beam

Depending on your CCTV project, normal IR illuminator beam will cover between 15degree to 80 degree. If you want to cover more wide angel for your illuminator beam, more short distance you can reach.

3. The Wavelength in which the IR illuminator produces light as to it being slightly visible to completely invisible to the human eye.

Cameras See the Light But The Human Eye Does Not

Normal IR illuminators have infrared leds that emit light at 850nm. This is a part of the spectrum that the human eye cannot see. Infrared cameras or ir sensitive cameras, however, can see the light. This means that you can add light to your video security system without adding visible light (such as a flood light). Your video image will be brighter and more like daylight when you use an infrared illuminator.

Infrared illuminators can be a great addition to your video surveillance setup. Because they do not require a video signal, only power, you can add them into an existing system to help your lighting. Question about a camera?

I’m Thinking about buying a Full Spectrum Digital Camera Or INFRARED Digital Camera . I like to know if you have to have an IR Light Illuminator. Do you have to buy one of those to use an any of them cameras or are they built in to the camera… if anyone has one of theses cameras can you give me any info on this an a good place to buy them at …
Yea i would be using it inside an outside for ghost huntin….. if you can tell me some good cameras for that would help also….

If you are talking about a dSLR, then you will have to either buy a new one that has been converted or have yours converted. They use the natural IR light that the sun provides. If you wish to shoot indoors or at night, you will have to supply the IR light source

Because of this, thermal imaging night vision goggles are able to use these heat signatures in order to display an image of the object.

These night vision devices win over the light intensifier night vision goggles because of the fact that they require no light at all to be made active and can therefore be used in places where there is no light such as in hazes and fogs.
