How Can Motion Censors Help You?

Home security gadgets have undergone a revolution in the recent past. Gone are the days when a sturdy bolt and latch would take care of the security of your home. From high resolution surveillance cameras to motion censors and wireless gadgets to simple solutions like stun guns and pepper spray, there is a whole lot of home security options.
Motion censors are useful for homes, supermarkets and business organizations to trap intruders. There are many types of motion detectors that use various techniques like radio signals, photoelectric beams, infrared sensors, vibrations etc to detect human presence.
Get started by undertaking a detailed survey your home and find out a suitable place to put the motion sensor. Hallways and stairways are ideal spots to put up the censors as these are the main traffic spots in any home. A passive infrared motion sensor detects heat so you should eliminate areas like open windows, heat vents radiators etc.
There are both wired and wireless motion sensor models. Some motion sensors come with a lithium battery as power source; you can also access a power source for a wireless motion sensor. Motion sensors can have sound and light alarms and some can even notify you on your phone or computer when you are away. Motion censors have different ranges from a few feet to up to 5,000 square feet.
Perimeter alarm will alert you of trespassers with a sound alarm while the driveway alarms set off the moment someone uses the driveway of your home. Motion detectors can not only let you know about intruders but also will drop clues of any person who is about to arrive and the neighborhood kids who have strayed into your property. Well suited for country homes and farms, these alarms will help you keep theft and vandalism under check.
Outdoor motion detectors can be used not only to protect you from intruders but also as a safety mechanism for others. For instance motion detectors help you detect kids straying into swimming pools, hunting shed, chemical and machinery sheds which could have ammunition and dangerous chemicals and help avert mishaps
Designed to monitor both the indoors and outdoors of your home while you are away, motion censors ensure a secure and hassle free life for you.

make motion-sensor light stay on?

How can I make a motion-sensor light stay on?

In our open computer lab, the lights are on motion-sensors to save power. The problem is the sensors are in a far corner by the door, and don’t “see” the people. Since it’s a computer lab everyone is sitting still, working away and every 10 minutes the lights go out until someone walks over and waves in front of the sensor.

What triggers these? Heat? Infrared-light?

There has to be a way of tricking it that someone is there.
The university won’t let us replace it with a real switch so this has to be something removable, like a portable fan or a IR flashlight – just not sure what to use.

Motion sensor lights can be either motion activated or infrared which detects body heat, but both types are usually adjustable. In your case an adjustment to increase the sensitivity would help since that will cause the light to trigger with less motion in the room. The time delay adjustment can increase the length of time the light will stay on. Both of the adjustments are usually labeled and can be changed by hand or a small screwdriver.

What did you pay for your Security System equipment and Installation and what is your monitoring fee?

I just had a door to door salesman make a very appealing offer for a free security system and installation, for $39 a month, including tax.

I’m just wondering if this is a reasonable fee or not and if the system/installation are typically free.

Thanks in advance.

I would check out the company first. Some of them have had some bad problems with contract issues. It may seem cheaper up front to go this route, but it generally isn’t cheaper in the long run.

You do have a different option, which is much less expensive. You could “do it yourself.” Just purchase the system thats right for you, install it and purchase monitoring. Much, much cheaper.

Vibration Testing Technology

To the savvy maintenance professional, industrial machinery almost “talks” to reveal its condition. The key to success is in understanding what the machine is saying. To detect problems, the professional “listens” in many ways: With eyes and ears, to see and hear conditions that may indicate problems and…

• With thermometers and thermal imagers, to detect overheating, poor electrical connections or failing bearings

• With digital multimeters and power analyzers, to diagnose electrical problems

• Using techniques like lubricant analysis, to gauge machine condition over time

And now new vibration testing tools provide the maintenance professional with a valuable new way not just to listen, but to find mechanical problems and fixes: these new troubleshooting tools are engineered to detect and evaluate machine vibration immediately and recommend any needed repairs.

A new kind of troubleshooting tool

Many industrial maintenance teams today work under severe restrictions on money and time. They may not have the resources to train for and implement the typical long-term vibration analysis program. Further, many professionals may think there are only two options for vibration testing; high-end vibration analyzers that are expensive and difficult to use, and low-end vibration pens, which aren’t particularly accurate.

Fortunately, a new breed of vibration-testing tool fills the middle of the category, combining the diagnostic capability of a trained vibration analyzer with the speed and convenience of lower-end testers, at a reasonable price. This type of tool is designed to be not merely a vibration detector, but a complete diagnostic and problem-solving solution, and targeted specifically for maintenance professionals who need to troubleshoot mechanical problems and quickly understand the root cause of equipment condition.

These tools are designed and programmed to diagnose the most common mechanical problems of unbalance, looseness, misalignment and bearing failures in a wide variety of mechanical equipment, including motors, fans, blowers, belts and chain drives, gearboxes, couplings, pumps, compressors, closed coupled machines and spindles.

Not just data, but actionable results

When these new testers detect a fault, they identify the problem, its location and severity on a multi-level scale to help the maintenance professional prioritize maintenance tasks. They may also recommend repairs.

Mechanical diagnosis can begin with the user placing the device’s accelerometer on the machine under test. The accelerometer may have a magnetic mount or can be installed using adhesive. As the machine under test operates, the accelerometer detects its vibration along three planes of movement (vertical, horizontal and axial) and transmits that information to the tester. Using a set of advanced algorithms, the tester then provides a plain-text diagnosis of the machine with a recommended solution.

No training? No problem

Mechanical equipment is typically evaluated by comparing its condition over time to an established baseline condition. Vibration analyzers used in condition-based monitoring programs rely upon these baseline conditions to evaluate machine condition and estimate remaining operating life. System operators must have considerable training and experience before they can determine the meaning and significance of the vibration spectra they detect.

But what about the maintenance pro who isn’t trained in vibration analysis? How do you tell the difference between acceptable vibration, and the kind of vibration that demands immediate attention to service or replace troubled equipment?

Fortunately, extensive experience with mechanical vibration, what it means and how to fix it is built into the advanced algorithms of today’s testers. Now the maintenance professional can quickly and reliably determine the cause of the machine vibration, learn the severity and location of the problem and receive recommendations for repair. It’s all done with the intelligence built into the tester, without the extensive training, monitoring and recording required for typical vibration monitoring programs.

These testers deliver plain language recommendations about what to do next. For equipment maintenance teams hard pressed and on the go, these precise directions are what they need to take action now, maintain mechanical equipment in top shape, and keep facilities productive. One example of this type of tool is the handheld Fluke 810 Vibration Tester.

Wireless Motion Detector Lights, 40, “”, “”, “”, “”, “”, “”, “”, “”, “”, “”, “2″, “”, “4″

For people who do not live in a safe area, outdoor motion sensor lighting can act as a practical security guard against burglars and trespassers. These foul people roam openly under the covers of darkness in the evenings. Many of them attempt to burgle houses and commit other crimes. You would not want to expose yourself and your house to such nuisances. This is where outdoor motion sensor lighting helps.

Using the motion sensor system has its own set of unique advantages. The biggest advantage is that the lights that are turned on with these systems are on-demand. And the power consumption is thus far lesser. The major benefits of using outdoor motion sensor lighting for safety and security are listed below.

Silent and continuous watching: The outdoor motion sensor keeps watch of your premises and vulnerable spots of your backyard and patio as you sleep. Humans sleep but machines do not. So if there is any movement happening at any time of the night, the sensor will figure that out. And the sensing happens equally well in sheer darkness too, since the sensor technology does not rely upon light. Even if you are not at home, the sensor will still keep watching as long as you keep it turned on.

Lighting on demand: Now, let’s say that your outdoor motion sensor has detected a movement within its area of radius. What does it do in response? It simply switches on its light – and if you have a floodlight installed then that would really make the entire place go bright. It would get switched on automatically and immediately, almost like a knee jerk reaction.

Impact of suddenness: Once the light gets turned on all of a sudden, the intruder is caught off guard. Since being spotted and identified is one of the worst nightmares that the intruder can have, they would be stunned by the sudden light and then immediately try to run away. In fact, the intensity of the light may ensure that you or some passer by – someone would be able to spot and identify the person.

Energy savings: Unlike ordinary flood lights, you do not have to keep the outdoor motion sensor lighting system in a mode where the light will continue to glow. The light would normally remain turned off and the sensor would work. But once it senses motion or movement, the light will be automatically switched on. So trespassers will run away and guests will feel welcome.

As you see, using outdoor motion sensor lighting has a set of advantages that are handy in the practical life. So it is of no surprise that people are appreciating these sensor lights today more than ever before.

Motion Sensor Led, 40, “”, “”, “”, “”, “”, “”, “”, “”, “”, “”, “2″, “”, “4″

In recent years the trend to living outdoors, despite our unpredictable climate, has led to a huge increase in the demand for outdoor lighting, both decorative, and security based. The improvement in LED technology has also given a boost to walk-over and drive-over lights which are recessed into a drive, pavement or decking.

With an explosion in the building of large ‘mansion’ style houses outdoor lighting designers have been able to express themselves in many ways, providing beautiful large decorative lanterns around the house, using concealed LED flood lighting amongst shrubbery and vegetation and powerful halogen floodlights, which are PIR sensor activated, at selected positions around the home which need instant bright light should anyone approach. Some have fully computerised systems which can be programmed to vary the timing of lights depending on the time of year, security required or occupation of the property.

Most homes, up and down the country, have an outdoor light beside the front door, traditionally a kind of ‘carriage’ style outdoor lantern (which are still popular) but more in fashion recently are the ‘stainless steel’ contemporary style outdoor light. Some of these more modern outdoor lights feature LED lamps, which give an almost pale blue light, they are very eco-friendly with low energy consumption, I would suggest they are good to give a glow of light around a front door but not really very bright.

The more traditional style outdoor lantern, does suit a lot of our older properties and is capable of giving a good light either with a 100w light bulb or a 20w compact fluorescent energy saver lamp. They often have matching ‘post lights’ for gate posts, these give an individual style to your driveway entrance as well as providing security for your property. If you have space for a ‘lamp post’ this can also be installed, usually in a rear or front garden to give extra light and a decorative feature, at between 6′-9′ tall you can choose from many designs. All these traditional outdoor lanterns are usually made from cast aluminium, then treated with a baked on paint finish for extra durability, guarantees by manufacturers range from 1 year up to 25 years for the finest quality which can withstand even coastal weather.

The use of recessed LED deck lighting has grown enormously, these are usually small individual units which are linked together, a small hole is cut into the decking then the light unit is sunk until it is level with the surface of the deck, they use very low amounts of power e.g. 0.5 watts per unit, yet provide a really attractive feature. Often the light they give is either white or bright blue.

In the commercial environment recessed LED lights provide an economical way of illuminating footpaths, driveways and even car parks, sometimes using coloured LEDS such as red, green or yellow.

With reduction of energy consumption being a vital part of our day to day lives outdoor lights have two ways of tackling that (besides LEDs), one is the use of P.I.R. sensors (passive infra red) which will switch your light on when someone approaches and activates the sensor, the sensor is set to turn off after a short period of time if no further motion is detected, thus minimising the amount of time a light is on. The second way of cutting the electric consumption is the use of Compact Fluorescent lamps, they use about one fifth of the power a regular tungsten lamp uses which makes them very effective if your outdoor lights are left on all night for instance. The compact fluorescent lamps can even be retro-fitted into your existing outdoor lights whether they have BC or ES lamp holders.

Need a Room Indicator light/sign when motion sensor switch is triggered inside the room?

I’ve searched for hours to no avail. I’ve got a double light switch box outside our mud/bathroom room that is now empty, because I moved those switches inside the room. So now I want to put an Indicator Light/Occupied LED sign or something in there to show the room is occupied, triggered by the lightswitch toggle, or better yet, via motion detection switch triggered inside. And I’d like to do it for minimal costs…ANY SUGGESTIONS? I’ve looked all over for LED type thing that could be wired into a Switch. Ceiling motion detection appears to be too expensive – so just figured the motion light switch would do. This room has an outside entry as well, so knowing if someone is in there would be great, and better looking than patching the elctrical box hole as well.
I’d like a ‘Room in Use’ sign that would fit that area if possible – but an LED light only is acceptable alternative if no such thing exists.

If you pigtailed the wires within the old box:

Purchase a LED light which has a threaded barrel with a nut and washer: Electronic store (ie; Radio
Shack) should have them. Make sure they are 110 volts rated and have short wires attached.
Purchase a blank cover for the double light switch box.
Drill a hole in the blank cover just slightly larger than the barrel of the LED.
Attach the LED to the blank cover.
Attach the two LED wires to the appropriate electric wires which operates the lights.
Attach blank cover to box.

Do You Want To Know About Strong Magnets?

Strong magnets are a permanent magnet that is almost impossible to demagnetize. They come in for classifications based on their composition. These are the neodymium iron boron or NIB, samaraium cobalt or SmCo, alnico, and ceramic or ferrite.

Of the four magnets, the neodymium iron boron and samarium cobalt are the strongest. These two are also known as the rare earth magnets because their compounds are derived from lathanoid series of elements which are considered rare on the periodic table. The NIB and SmCo were developed as early as the 1970s.

Alnico magnet is a compound derived from Aluminum, Nickel and Cobalt. It was first introduced in the 1940s. As the alnico is not as strong as the previous two magnets, it can be demagnetized. Alnico magnets are also the least affected by temperature. Hence, horseshoes and bar magnets should be properly cared for to prevent them from losing the magnetism.

The most popular magnets today are the ceramic or ferrite. First developed in the 1960s, the ceramic magnets are fairly strong, but the strength of their magnet varies with differences in temperature.

As strong magnets classified as permanent, they can be made into different shapes including round bars, donuts, rings, rectangles, disks, and custom shapes. Just as the shape of the magnet is important, the manner of magnetizing the magnet is equally significant.

Depending on the application, the magnet can be configured in many ways. For instance, a ring magnet can be magnetized N on the inside, and S on the outside. Or it can be magnetized S on one edge and N on the other. Another configuration is magnetizing the magnet N on the bottom or S on top.

The strength of a magnet can be indicated on its magnetic fields. The strength of the magnetic fields is measured with two units, the Gauss and Tesla. The size of a magnet influences the strength of its magnetic field.

The neodymium magnets are 5 to 15 times stronger than the magnets used in refrigerators. They are perceived to lift 400 times their own weight in steel, and thus used in expensive electronic devices and equipment like the hard drives of computers, loudspeakers, and cellular phones.

They are also used in medicine and the health industry especially in magnetic therapy to relieve pain and ameliorate the symptoms of arthritis. The astronauts used neodymium to maintain muscle ton during space flights. The MRI scanning machines do not function without neodymium in them.

On the other hand, the alnico magnets are preferred in industrial applications due to their exceptional linear temperature, good corrosion resistance, and high magnetic flux. These magnets are found in vending machines, medical instruments, generators, volt-amp meters, electronic ignition systems, cow magnets, and magnetic reed switches.

Finally, the ceramic magnets, being the least of strong magnets, are used to visualize the sequences of proteins, peptides and nucleic acids. They are also used in making decorative magnets.

We CMS Magnetics have for you Neo magnets. We have Neodymium, ceramic, SmCo, AlNiCo, and flexible magnets. These come in different shapes and sizes.

Understanding The Role Of Megapixel In A Digital Camera

By awareness of the purpose of megapixels in a digital camera, you will be able to buy the finest alternative at the cheapest value. Even beginners will be able to decide on a better camera.

Higher the megapixel count, better is photo-quality?

This is one of the most misunderstood opinion about rating of digital camera and their photo quality. Consider a mosaic of tiles, each megapixel is like a tile and a mosaic of these tiles make a picture clearer. That is all right, but it doesn’t mean that picture taken by a 10 or 12 or 50 megapixel camera will be more sharp than a 3 megapixel camera, because for most functional purposes, 3 megapixel quality is fine enough. At the most you may require 6 – 8 megapixel for photo-quality as appears in magazines. Anything ahead of that isn’t of much use to a non-professional photographer.
One megapixel is like one tile. When a picture is taken, the CCD or CMOS sensor in the camera receives an array of such tiles to create an image. It then converts it to electrical signals which are processed to create a picture. An array of 2048*1536 generates a pixel count of 31,45,728 pixel which is the same as 3.1 megapixels.

What affects the quality of pictures then?

The quality of the lens, the algorithms used to make the photo from raw data composed by the sensor and the focusing mechanism are some of the other factors that affect the final result.
It should also be well thought-out, how large is the sensor in the camera. Consumer digital cameras have tiny image sensors. They are measured in microns. A micron is a millionth of a meter. Most sensors in consumer cameras are less than 10 microns. It is kept so, so as to shrink the size of the camera so you can carry it in your pocket.

DSLR cameras have bigger sensors. The main disadvantages of a smaller sensor is that it produce images with more noise than a large sensor. If you have to focus on a small area, it is difficult to do with a small sensor. Further, any shaking in handling the camera is inflated in a small sensor.

That means in right hand, with a proper sized sensor, a 6 MP camera is also good enough. In few scenarios a larger megapixel count may be useful, but for general purposes, it is not required.

In what scenario is a higher megapixel beneficial?

If you have to take the photograph of an airplane or a bird flying at a distance and you start zooming with a digital camera, you use digital zoom to reach it, the picture becomes grainy. This is a typical defect of the digital zoom. In such a case, if you have a higher megapixel count, you won’t need the digital zoom.

Buy wisely choosing the appropriate megapixel rating you will be able to get a cheapest yet a better digital camera.

Protect your garden with a motion activated scarecrow sprinkler

Not too long ago, poisons and traps were the standard methods to protect your garden and crops from rodents and small pests. Poisons are a bad idea for the simple reason that they are poisonous and can harm your kids and pets. Poisons also tend to find their way into the water and soil which your edible crops take nourishment from which is obviously not what you wanted in the first place.

Poisons are also not as effective as we might think since they often target only a specific species. There are other animals that also damage your garden and frustrate home owners, and which the undesirable poisons and traps are ineffective against. Deer, birds, cats and dogs.. the list goes on.

Anyone who lives in an area where deer abound, knows that these lovely animals can be a severe nuisance and wreck vegetable gardens as well as decorative plants and trees. Although it is easy to scare deer, a normal scarecrow is totally ineffective because to them it is just another static part of the garden. The same is true of birds. You can have any number of flashing colorful banners flying from your fruit trees but the birds still manage to get most of the fruit.

And who wants to have their garden littered with reflective banners and ugly traditional scarecrows?

There is a solution to all of these problems in the shape of the modern scarecrow which is essentially a motion activated sprinkler such as the Contech Scarecrow Sprinkler. Scarecrow sprinklers have quickly become popular with residential homeowners as well as people living in more rural areas.

The scarecrow sprinkler is a eco friendly solution since the only power it utilizes is water pressure. All you need is a normal water tap. It is also a humane animal deterrent because there are no poisons, no traps and the animal is simply scared away. A scarecrow sprinkler is also more effctive than a traditional garden scarecrow because the spray of water it shoots has a powerful surprise effect and covers quite a bit of ground. The mechanism is simple, which also makes it very reliable and maintenance-free.

Usage is straightforward:

1) Conect the screcrow to a garden tap, for example via your garden hose.

2) Position it so that it covers an area you want to protect.

3) Open the tap. The scarecrow sprinkler is now “armed”. No water is used unless the mechanism fires.

If the motion detector in the scarecrow is activated the sprinkler shoots a quick spray of water that scares the offending animal away. This works on all kinds of animals, even birds and rodents.

If you decide to buy a Scarecrow Sprinkler we recommend you buy a established brand and model. Contech are marketleaders with their Contech Electronics CRO101 Scarecrow Motion-Activated Sprinkler

Hundreds of positive reviews on Amazon marketplce is a testament to the quality and popularity of the Contech Scarecrow Sprinkler.

If you decide to buy a Scarecrow Sprinkler we advise you buy a established brand and model such as the Contech CRO101.

Aerofoil extends your Windows laptop battery life by automatically switching power profiles

I’ve got an old Toshiba laptop battery. It’s a workhorse, and I take good care of it. But as a laptop ages, one thing invariably happens: Battery life grows shorter and shorter. It’s a matter of chemistry, and no amount of prudency seems to keep it from happening.

So as your laptop ages, intelligent power management becomes increasingly important. The question is “how do I keep this thing from hogging so much battery when it’s not connected?”

Sure, Windows has built-in power profiles; but for some reason, right-clicking the battery icon only shows two profiles (out of the three default ones), and somehow that list never includes the particular profile I’m trying to switch to (I have four profiles).

Aerofoil is a free application that strives to make the power-saving process painless. It’s one of those things that should have been built into Windows in the first place: As soon as your laptop switches to battery power, Aerofoil switches the power profile to Power Saver. Plug the laptop back in, and Aerofoil switches you back to High Performance (or whatever you’ve got configured).

But wait, there’s more! (Cue cheesy infomercial music) Aerofoil also switches off Windows’ Aero Glass interface whenever it switches to Power Saver mode. It can also automatically mute the sound when you switch to battery mode!

One note: When you first run Aerofoil, your computer may pop up an error message about msvcp100.dll. In that case, you need the MS Visual C++ redistributable, which you can grab from Microsoft for free – both for x64 and for x86 systems. Enjoy!
