Purchasing a safe is major decision and shouldn’t be taken lightly. How does this sound as an opening paragraph to my novel?
The young sentry felt his heartbeat quicken as he watched the first star twinkle into sight. He was anxious to be home. Anxious to be anywhere but this towering mountain peak.
After a steadying breath, the man raised a horn to his lips and blew a thunderous warning to his fellow villagers in the valley beneath him. Then, wasting no time, he scrambled to a small cave on the hillside that was to be his only form of sanctuary, tonight. He whispered a grateful prayer to the Gods who had granted him the foresight to light a fire before night arrived. Now he could huddle by the dull flames, legs pulled close to his chest, savouring what heat he could.
“Assemble!” He heard the call echo around the valley. Drably uniformed guards were yelling it into the twilight. If another sentry were watching for the stars tonight, he knew he would be yelling with them.
Gripping. I’m glad you didn’t hinder it with too many details, as long as you put them in later.
Watch your cliches. “Wasting no time” is unimaginative.

should be:
“scrambled to the small cave on the hillside that was to be his only form of sanctuary, tonight.”
And your last paragraph, I don’t like. I don’t know why. But I don’t like it, haha.
