Worried about vandalism? Many people living in suburban areas are noticing their neighborhoods change, and are starting to worry about something that had never crossed their minds before in their seemingly safe havens: petty crime. The economic crisis has contributed in no small way to the incidence of squatters and vagrants in foreclosed and condemned homes in otherwise nice neighborhoods. With the number of people out on the street at a high and the number of empty houses at a high point as well, the conditions have somewhat aligned to form a climate of crime and vandalism against those still doing economically well, or economically sufficing, as the case may be. Whereas you may have never worried about vandals before, you may now be asking yourself how you can best protect your home on short notice. Trying some of the following home security measures can be the perfect place to start.
Video Surveillance Cameras. If you are looking to catch the perpetrators on film, a perfect option can be video surveillance. You can choose to have the cameras in plain sight as a deterrent, or hide them to get an image of their faces on video. This system while extremely effective can be somewhat costly and difficult to not only set up but use. Many people are also not able to review all the footage on a regular basis without eating into their personal time and energy. It is possible to set up a video surveillance system that can be viewed remotely, or that begins recording only when motion is detected to save time. Those looking to get the deterrent effect of the camera without spending the money on a full system might try dummy cameras complete with the blinking red ‘recording’ light.
Perimeter Alarms. Home alarm systems don’t just have to go on the house. The vandalism problem may be happening not directly to your home, but somewhere on your property. Give the vandals a scare the next time they come near by setting up a perimeter alarm. Such alarms can be set up to sound a scary siren or a pleasant chime, depending on how often you think welcome guests will also be entering your property. The minute danger starts to draw near, you will be prepared. Such systems can also be perfect if you expect someone of stealing things from your property, or using your property for its features (like a pool or trampoline) while you are away.
Home Alarm Systems. Often petty crimes like vandalism can escalate rapidly, especially if young criminals are testing the waters. Make sure your property and home are protected with some type of home alarm system. There are many kinds of systems available from wired to wireless, fully monitored by security professionals to simple sound systems. It’s important to protect your doors and windows, and be informed when anyone comes near your property. These measures will protect not only your belongings in the event of an intrusion, but you and your loved ones too!

How can I avoid sounding condescending when talking to stupid people?
My friends tell me that whenever I communicate with stupid people, I begin to talk slowly and verify the intellectually challenged person’s knowledge of elementary facts.
It is not my intention to lower my level when talking to these people, but if I spoke to them as equals I would need to repeat myself several times and this would be insanely frustrating.
Please chime in on how you talk to stupid people and if you are a stupid person yourself please give me some ideas on how I can respectfully communicate with you, Judge Judy viewers, and Fox News commentator parrots. Thanks.
Be very careful about your tone of voice. This requires self awareness. Listen to yourself while you are talking to somebody you are interested in. Try to use the same tone of voice with everybody.
Stop using the term “stupid” in your own mind and when you are talking to friends. Intelligence is a continuum, and there is no line sudden line between intelligent and not.
Be curious about what other people are saying. Somebody may use smaller words than you do, but what they are saying can still be informative. Approximate your vocabulary to theirs. There is no need to show off your language skills when you are talking to somebody.
As to politics, there is a huge need to express more liberal opinions. I recommend DSCC.org’s new “Rant” section. Realize that Fox uses a common propaganda technique of endlessly repeating what are often half truths at best. They choose slogans that are easy for people to repeat. Learning to counter that in conversations with others is difficult, but worth the effort for yourself and for society.
