1. Keypad – This is the brain home security systems. It constantly monitors all the sensors that are connected to doors, windows, etc. This is where you will perform system checks if needed and is also where you activate and de-activate your alarm system.
2. Door sensors – These sensors are generally mounted on the top outer edge of the door. The sensor consists of 2 pieces. One is attached to the door jamb and the other is attached to the door. Both pieces contain magnets. When the door opens it breaks the magnetic field between the contacts and signals to the brain/keypad that the door has been open. A basic alarm usually includes 2 door sensors. They are also usually wireless.
3. Motion detector – The motion detector does just what the name indicates. Once the system is activated the motion detector activates and will trigger the alarm system if something crosses within the field of vision of the motion detector. With the better alarm companies such as ADT and Protect America you’ll usually get 1 motion detector with a basic package, but it may vary.
One final note, home security systems are not only for homes. Someone living in an apartment or even a student in a college dorm can benefit from the added security of an alarm system. All major alarm companies offer wireless home security systems. That means that you don’t have to drill holes to mount any hardware.
So let’s review. Your basic home security systems typically include your keypad, 2 door sensors (front & rear) and 1 motion detector. How do I wire a low voltage circuit to light an LED when one or both of my Garage doors are open?
I want to create a circuit using a couple of magnetic door sensors similar those in standard alarms. Using a simple plug in transformer in the garage, I want to illuminate a small indicator light inside the house when one or both doors are left open. Not sure of exactly how to wire this and what type of indicator lamp to use.
Oh good grief – the goverment is not going to attack you for doing some wiring in your house, even if you do it wrong!
A simple way to solve th is is to be creative and use a wireless door bell (radio shack) mounted to ring the bell when the door is open (either one). If the sound bothers you then replace the sound device with an LED (also sold at radio shack) Works on a 9v battery and is cheap.
