Each week we receive emails from the Nassau County Police about crimes which have taken place throughout the county. while personal crime such as robberies and home invasions are still a rarity in Garden City, it seems to us that there has been an uptick in crime in other parts of the county. whether this is due to the economic conditions or the scary rise in the use of heroin and abuse of strong prescription painkillers is unknown, but each week we seem to see more crime than we used to.
Just this week there was a report of an 18 year old young woman who went downstairs in her home and saw that there was a burglar also in the house. She was able to go back upstairs undetected and hide in a closet while she called the police. As parents of teenagers, we can only imagine how terrifying that must have been for the girl and her parents.
In his column this week Mayor Donald Brudie lists some tips on avoiding crime, and in particular personal attack type crime. It’s definitely worth reading his tips if only to help remember to stay alert to the possiblities of danger.
While Garden City is still a remarkably safe place, criminals really don’t care where the boundaries of a community are, so residents would be wise to always lock their doors and use alarm systems if they have them.
Also, lock your car doors when parking, even in your own driveway — Garden City residences have been hit with a lot of thefts of property from cars lately, as have many other towns. while this kind of crime is not as scary as personal attacks, no one wants to lose his nice new GPS system or cell phone.
