Dry Chemical Fire Protection Systems
Different commercial and industrial properties have different fire protection needs. When we think of fire protection systems, we usually think of sprinkler systems. however, a variety of other types of fire protection systems exist. for example, factories, plants, and other buildings in the industrial sector are often best protected with dry chemical protection systems.
Dry Chemical Agents
Dry chemical suppression systems work by coating the combustible surface with a dry chemical that blocks off the fire’s oxygen supply. Different classes of fires respond differently to different types of chemical agents. these agents include:
- Multipurpose agents. these chemical powders are normally yellow in color and can be used for many different classes of fires, including Class A, B, and C.
- Standard agents. these powders are white and consist of potassium bicarbonate or sodium bicarbonate. They can be used on Class B and C fires.
- Purple or PK agents. this powder is purple in color and consists of potassium bicarbonate. It quickly extinguishes flammable liquid spills and thus is best for use in high hazard areas such as refineries, chemical plants, and airports.
These agents may be deployed with small extinguishers, large fixed installations, or mobile units.
