Man captured on video attacking Haltom City resident is arrested
HALTOM CITY Police have arrested a man suspected of attacking another man who was trying to protect his neighbors property.David Herrera, 37, was in the North Richland Hills jail on Friday facing charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, police said. Herrera’s bond was set at $50,000, according to police.Herrera was arrested on Thursday, two days after the attack. Police received several tips after release to the media of a surveillance video of the assault. Those tips led to Herrera’s identification and the issuance of an arrest warrant, according to Cpl. Joe Hackfeld, Haltom City police spokesman.Herrera, who lives in Fort Worth, was picked up by officers with the Fort Worth Special Weapons and Tactics unit that had been notified of his whereabouts, Hackfeld said.The video shows Robert Richter, a man who installed cameras to watch over his home on Woodhaven Lane and protect it from vandals and burglars, being punched by a man who later threw a flower pot through his glass front door.Richter had spotted two people with flashlights trying to open a door of a vehicle that was on a city street.Richter said during an interview that he yelled at the suspects, got into a fight with one of them and got cut on his left forearm. after the brief exchange of punches, Richter went back to his home, followed by the burglar, who tried to get inside. The attack occurred about 11 p.m. Tuesday in the 4700 block of Woodhaven Lane. The confrontation and attack were captured on a surveillance camera on the homeowner’s security system.
