EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) — three local businesses are beefing up security after a recent rash of burglaries.
The Eau Claire Police Department believes one person is responsible for the early Monday morning burglaries on the south side of Eau Claire.
Investigators said the suspect smashed open the doors of Stitches by Sharon, Rochelle’s Salon and Spa and the Dental Office of Dr. Chris Poss and stole cash.
There was something borrowed, something blue, something old and something new for the Bridal Shoppe Monday morning, as two neighboring businesses were burglarized.
As well as running the Bridal Shoppe, Shannon Lindquist owns the strip mall on Mall Drive that holds Stitches by Sharon and Rochelle’s Salon and Spa.
“It’s not a good start to the new year,” Lindquist said.
Lindquist said the crook swiped about $120 from the salon and spa, but that’s nothing compared to the damage.
“It could be roughly up to about $1,500 in damages to get the doors replaced,” Lindquist said.
And at the Dental Office of Dr. Chris Poss on Stein Boulevard, employees got a similar surprise Monday morning.
“I unlocked the door and found a big mess. I didn’t know what to think,” said Office Administrator Luann Meyer.
Meyer said someone busted through a stained glass window to unlock the front door and took about $70.
“The computers are safe and the files and everything else are safe,” Meyer said.
Detective Sergeant Derek Thomas said there many things businesses can do to protect from burglars.
“They focus on businesses that are vulnerable, is there adequate lighting on the outside of the business? if the doors are easily broken into and there’s not an alarm system or if the shrubs aren’t trimmed down,” Thomas said.
He also said break-ins can be prevented 80-90% of the time with target hardening techniques.
“In the long run you’ll save a lot of money,” Thomas said.
Police said no arrests have been made.
