1. Oversee secure campus network architecture

  • Develop, maintain and update a network security strategy to accommodate physical, procedural, and content security aspects.
  • Implement electronic security measures within the campus network system to ensure highly available and reliable network access.
  • Work collaboratively with the IT Security Officer and Network Director to develop and implement procedural network security policies to formalize the process for introducing, removing, or altering security settings and configurations on network service components.
  • Maintain a high level of competency in all applicable network security technologies including but not limited to: access control lists, intrusion detection/prevention systems, firewall systems, network packet capture, virtual private networks, encryption systems, anti-virus, operating system security tuning, role-based access systems, etc.
  • Plan, develop, implement and maintain secure network connectivity for authorized users both on and off campus including both network and server components
  • Work with professional support vendors to test, configure and implement new security technologies.

2. Lead campus network design and engineering services

  • Plan and design network infrastructure to accommodate current and future capacity needs.
  • Plan and design a system of network and server components such as, DNS, DHCP, authentication servers, network routers, network switches, firewalls and intrusion detection/prevention systems to provide a highly-available, high-quality network.
  • Plan and design network architecture to accommodate local, wireless and wide-area networks including architecture to support multiple layer network services such as IP address assignment, DNS resolution, Internet connectivity, e-mail, VoIP telephony services, etc.
  • Research and evaluate new network technologies.
  • Evaluate, recommend and implement management systems for monitoring and troubleshooting network server and hardware performance.
  • Continuously assess network design and recommend changes as needed.
  • Work with professional support vendors to test, configure and implement new network technologies.
  • Develop and maintain change processes and procedures to formalize any changes to be implemented into the production network.
  • Work as a lead on all other campus projects affecting or requiring network services

3. Perform network solutions development and network system administration

  • Work collaboratively with all necessary departments to assess and implement secure network solutions for a wide variety of campus applications and solutions.
  • Research, recommend, plan and deploy hardware and/or software security systems as part of the overall network security strategy.
  • Regularly test and apply updates to servers/various systems which provide network services. this includes, but not limited to: core switches, routers, access control hardware, monitoring hardware which provide network services
  • Monitor and maintain logs on systems providing network services.
  • Troubleshoot the network using network management software, network sniffers, and network analyzers.
  • Provide 2nd and 3rd tier support for resolving complex network issues escalated by the Helpdesk.
  • Utilize vendor technical support for resolving complex issues.
  • Effectively communicate with the customer to resolve network service issues.

Minimum Training & Education Requirements: Graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in in electronics, telecommunications, engineering, or a closely related field and three years of experience in network design, analysis, or management. Experience in the field of work related to the position’s role may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Management Preferences: Current Cisco and/or GIAC certifications. Current Red Hat and/or Microsoft engineer certifications. Broad experience with Cisco network core, distribution, and edge equipment. Broad experience in the design of high performance, secure networks. Broad experience in the implementation and use of open source software. Experience in wireless networks, wireless security and encryption. Experience in Cisco VoIP technology. Experience with network access control systems, Cisco clean Access or other platforms.

Occasional Overtime and Weekend Work may be required.
