IOWA CITY – in efforts to prevent Iowa City burglaries, police said they have increased uniformed and plainclothes patrol efforts, and have also reminded the public that they are seeking any information regarding such incidents.

Fifty burglaries have been reported at local businesses and residences since November, but only 12 burglary arrests have been made, according to a news release.

Police said they are wary of the increase, particularly since many leave for the winter holiday. Targeted areas include neighborhoods mostly occupied by students, but also businesses throughout Iowa City, especially in the downtown area, the release indicated.

Jorey Bailey, crime prevention officer with the Iowa City Police Department, recommends residents have sturdy locks on all windows and doors, stop all deliveries, ensure smoke and burglar alarms are functional, turn the bell or ringer tone on home phones down, avoid announcing absences on answering machines, lock all garages, windows and doors, and consider holding valuables in bank safety deposit box. The public can also request to put their home on a neighborhood watch list with police.

Bailey also advised residents can take steps to make their homes appear lived in by leaving shades and blinds partially open, set automatic timers to control lights and electronics, ask a neighbor to keep an eye on the home by collecting the mail, occasionally park at the home and take garbage out as scheduled.

The public is encouraged to report any suspicious activity to the police by calling 9-1-1 or (319) 356-5275.

Iowa City Area CrimeStoppers offers rewards for information leading to any burglary arrests. Anonymous calls can be made to 319-358-TIPS (8477).
