MUMBAI: An Australian Polygraph Examiner has expressed his desire to conduct the probe the recent match-fixing allegations made by former India players, Vinod Kambli.

Steve van Aperen, the expert who conducted the polygraph tests on former Australian captain Steve Waugh (voluntarily appeared) is ready to come over and do the same for the Indian team, which played the first Semi Final against Sri Lanka in 1996 World Cup.

Speaking exclusively with The Sports Encounter over telephone from Melbourne, hours after India’s sports minister Ajay Maken’s call (“Vinod Kambli’s match-fixing claims should be probed by BCCI”), he said, “if polygraph testing needs to be conducted I could come over or my colleague could conduct testing also depending on my availability. it certainly would make a big story”.

According to the expert, the tests should be conducted on all players, except Vinod Kambli. “A polygraph test can only be conducted in relation to a factual event not on a suspicion, belief or opinion held by someone. For example it would not be suitable to conduct a polygraph test on Kambli based on the fact he only has a suspicion that match fixing was involved. unless he had direct knowledge a polygraph test on Kambli would be of little value”,

“having said that a polygraph test could be conducted on other team members as to whether they were complicit or directly involved in match fixing or had been approached to fix a match.  Polygraph testing should never be conducted on a person’s belief, suspicion, opinion or thoughts because people can rationalise an opinion or thought”, he further added.

The expert has also given his brief for the test. “Several questions could be asked but they need to be direct as to whether an approach was made to field first or whether anyone received any benefit for fielding first or similar such as:

* Were you approached by any person asking you to field first from outside the team?

* Did you agree with any person other than your team to field first?

* Did you receive any benefit, money or promise from someone outside the team to field first?

* Was it a joint decision to field first?

* Was any pressure placed on any team members to field first?

* Was the decision to field first pressured or insisted by any person from within the team?
