The controversial ownership of the house attracted the ire of neighbours with Dr Saul Zadka telling his local paper, the Ham & High, that he and neighbours wanted Gaddaffi to move from the area: “Residents do not want to live next to [him], even though he became a very acceptable figure among the British high society and political echelons,” he said.

But soon after the Financial News article was published, the house was occupied by squatters, called Topple the Tyrants, who said they would only leave when Gaddafi stood down. in a statement, the group said that it had taken matters into its own hands as it did not trust the British government to seize the Gaddafi regime’s corrupt assets. The property was later removed from the market. Glentree founder Trevor Abrahmsohn told Financial News that the listing had been taken down.

He said: “I can’t be done with it. We have heard nothing from the consignors and no funds have been transferred. Pending the legal and political situation, I can’t imagine we will hear from them for some time. They have other priorities.” [ bit.ly/hizOYS ]
