According to the FBI, every 14.6 seconds, a burglary takes place in the U.S. and the average burglary victim loses over $2000 worth of valuables.

Most studies agree that a properly installed alarm system is good at deterring most burglars.

Signage, loud speakers, and other indicators are easily spotted by most burglars and will most likely cause them to look for an easier target.

But, your protection should not stop there.  A security solution must be layered and an alarm is only part of good security.  your landscaping, neighborhood, cameras, physical protection, to include locks and doors, and lighting are other aspects of layered security.

How does an alarm work?

The basic elements of an alarm system comprise the following:

  • Detection – movement sensor, door contacts, pressure mat
  • Control –  control panel/keypad
  • Signaling - internal speaker, external speaker, remote monitoring

Detection

Most alarm systems have at least three types of detection device. The most commonly used are:

  • Magnetic contacts – which consist of a magnet fitted to the opening part of a door or window and a switch fitted to the frame. When the two parts are separated (when the door or window is opened) the alarm is activated.
  • Motion – they are generally fitted into the corner of a room and look for changes in temperature, such as an intruder’s body heat.
  • Acoustic – they are generally fitted to areas where glass may be broken and cover areas where motion may be hard to detect.

Control Panel

This is where you enter a code to switch the system on and off. The control panel monitors the detection devices, and if necessary activates the signaling device.

Signaling

  • Audible alarms – these comprise of a siren or speaker fitted to the outside of your house to attract attention and frighten off the burglar(s).
  • Monitored alarms - include a telephone connection to a 24 hour monitoring station, whose operators will call to you and/or the police if your alarm activates.

There is normally a fee involved in this service as well as costs associated with false alarms.

Alarm Company Vetting

It is important to research security options after you determine your unique requirements.  A commercial low cost solution is easy to defeat and may not meet your needs.
