Smoke alarm a life-saver in Mill Valley home blaze
A three-alarm blaze roared through a Mill Valley home early Thursday after a smoke detector alerted a resident to call for help.
“It definitely saved them,” said Mill Valley fire Capt. mark Glenn of the household smoke alarm that roused a sleeping resident shortly before 1 a.m.
No one was hurt in the fire that broke out at 212 Del Casa Drive, reported at 12:51 a.m. Two floors of the three-story structure were burned, with damage of “a couple hundred thousand (dollars), at least,” said Kai Pasquale, acting battalion chief for the Southern Marin fire Protection District.
“It’s going to be a substantial remodel, but I don’t think it’s a tear-down,” Glenn added.
Firefighters arrived to find flames shooting from the rear of the home, officials said.
Personnel from Mill Valley, Larkspur, Corte Madera, Tiburon, the county and Southern Marin fire agencies responded. Mill Valley authorities were trying to determine the cause of the blaze.
Glenn advised residents who don’t have smoke detectors to get them, and said those who do should make sure the alarm batteries are in order.
