While there are plenty uses for rim locks, providing you with total security is not one of them. These type of locks have been around for centuries, they were one of the earliest styles of security used for securing castles and the homes of nobles in England and Europe. They made their way to homes in the US, where they were imported up until the mid-1800′s. Local production began in the US around 1830.

To understand why these locks do not provide the best security, you need to first understand how they work. a rim lock is attached to the inside of a door. on the outside of the door, a small rim with a keyhole is inserted. to open the door from the inside you turn the latch, to open the door from the outside you use a key. the door locks automatically by latching shut as you leave. It is a spring loaded lock, with the latch on the inside holding open the lock when it is turned. the problem is that it is just as easy for someone with a credit card or a file to open it as well.

Rim locks should be used in conjunction with another type of lock, such as a deadbolt lock, to provide sufficient security. That is why they are often referred to as auxiliary locks.

They can be very decorative and elegant, however. There are many replicated locks available online, that feature incredibly delicate designs and crafting. They are often based on designs from as early as the 13th or 14th centuries. Replicated Victorian rim locks are also very popular. Especially in an older style house, they can add a lot of class and style to a home, giving it a charm that cannot really be matched by any other style of lock.

You can also use them on the inside of your home too, for example if you are able to get matching brass sets for your bedroom doors.

If you are serious about finding antique rim locks, you can also purchase these online. Naturally, the replicated ones are usually quite a bit cheaper than the antique kind. You can find a restored antique rim lock online for anywhere from $75 to $200. These restored antique locks are in perfect condition inside, and have been restored as much as possible on the outside.

Rim locks are perfect for adding a touch of elegance to your door, but should not be the only lock you have securing your door.
