Without getting too technical, a proximity or prox card is the generic term for the card access system often used in hotels, office buildings, schools and other secure facilities. just by holding the card over the reader, a lock opens and the card holder is granted access to a secured area like a hotel room or faculty room.

For employees, a single card can be used to access any room that they have jurisdiction over. but, the entire system can be scheduled so that certain cards can only be used at certain times. This makes it harder for intruders to gain access just by stealing an employee’s card.
