What would this man wear (post apocalypse)?
The main character of my story is a kind of post-apocalyptic Aragorn type. I’ve got his personality worked out, but I’m having trouble with his appearance. So far, he has a gas mask on hi belt and night-vision goggles (yeah, I’ve worked out how he keeps them charged). His weapons are a crossbow and an L1A1 SLR. I’m talking about everything, hair, clothes, accessories, notable features. Thanks in advance.
I should probably add that he was born 3 years after the bombings and he’s now 27.
An L1A1 is very heavy. Work that into the plot somehow, or equip the chap with a lighter weapon.
He will have difficulty getting access to decent haircuts. Very short hair or very unkempt hair seems likely, as does a beard. Gas masks do not seal well onto hairy faces so they leak. Maybe you could make a plot point out of that too.
Modern technical clothing has a short life in hard use, so nylon, cordura, goretex etc will be very shabby in a short time. Cotton (ventile) or heavy wool/loden/worsted/tweed/tartan is incredibly hard wearing and repairable. The same applies to old fashioned leather boots versus modern footwear. Depending on his choice of scavenged clothing, he might manage to appear either quite presentable and dapper or filthy and shabby. Clothes washing is more difficult than personal hygiene, so he might be a fresh-smelling man in stinky clothes.
